It’s been a week and I am almost constantly having to keep the car charging while at home just to keep up. On my previous L2, I charged every 2 to 3 days. My first problem was the outlet closest to the driveway shares the circuit with the family room. Oops, popping the breaker every time. The front of the house outlet wasn’t any better. Luckily there is a basement outlet I can drive to and get a charge with no issues.
I did find the small body and grip a little problematic when shooting with a long or heavy lens, though: I spent quite a bit of time with the excellent Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 mounted on the camera, and did experience some wrist fatigue by the end of the day. Since the camera is capable of very fast live autofocus during video recording, I often found myself wanting to zoom during the recording, something that would be anathema on a conventional video-capable SLR. Doing so required that I carry more of the weight of the lens/camera assembly on my right hand, so my left could operate the zoom ring more smoothly. The result was a lot of weight for my right wrist to carry, and the small grip made it more difficult than otherwise. When shooting normally with smaller lenses, though, I never found the grip uncomfortable.
My situation is a good example. I just purchased a new house and unfortunately it does not have a garage. Until I get the garage built in the Spring with a NEMA 14-50 outlet, I’m going to rough it with L1 at 120V/15A.
An emergency isolation switch. Santeri Viinamäki [CC BY 3.0], via Wikimedia CommonsYou will be familiar with emergency isolation switches if you have worked with large machine tools. A big red switch designed to be easy to hit to turn all the power off. You may want to hit it if something gets out of hand, or someone else may want to hit it for you to turn off the power that is electrocuting you. Either way it provides a very quick way to manually make any mains sources on your bench as safe as possible in the event of an incident. Remember the bit we mentioned earlier in about sitting on the end of the line twitching until the power is turned off? This is the big red switch that makes it very easy for someone to do that for you.

ead of single layer traces covered by the paint, what about multilayer PCB? So the traces would be embedded between two FR4. This way it would be safer.
Tell that to the parents buying baby formula adulterated with melamine. The Chinese have long standing traditions that support cutting as many corners as possible. Basically, cheat until caught. And their government seems to actively turn a blind eye to all manner of this nonsense.
I’d like to know how this does around town and also on the highway (independently) when the battery is exhausted. Maybe we should get standard EPA measurements with the battery starting empty in addition to the eMPG test.
As a result I wrote this article in 2015 outlining the issue, what I did to ID the problem and the solution.https://www.instructables.com/id/The-inner-workings-of-Counterfeit-FOTEK-SSRs/
I think most people recommend having the PSU switched off at the wall. That way it should be pretty much safe, but there is still the other issue you mention.
Agreed. I don’t see us revisiting the war of the currents. Interties between independent grids make sense, but there’s a reason that AC won, and I don’t think time and advancing technology has significantly changed that.
