About ten years ago, when the first cheap DVD players came into Australia from China, there was a huge failure rate due to this issue. The cause was almost always blown caps, and they could be fixed by up spec’ing the voltage tolerance for the caps in the supply.

I can’t speak for the Model 3 since I don’t know anyone who owns one yet, and Tesla has removed charging rates at 110 volts from their distance calculator.
Before we dig in, know that the Amazon Smart Plug is designed for use with a 100-120 volt three prong system so it’s a North American product only.
OK … back to the task at hand. Anyone care to comment on how a toaster oven is wired? How about a thermal blanket? None of these use a 12V or 24V switching power supply brick, so how do they do it???
You likely encountered a shared neutral between more than one circuit. You have to switch off the breakers for all the circuits that share the neutral.
The operation of the potential relay is based on the increase in back-electro-motive force (back-EMF) or a bucking voltage that is generated across the start winding as the motor increases in speed. The large metal mass of the motor’s rotor turning at high speeds with motor windings in close proximity has a voltage-generating effect.
Such an awful practice and terrible idea. I have an EV and would never do this (me being an EE). I decided to make this correctly and I installed dedicated #10 cable from the auxiliary power distribution box to the EV charger as a permanent connection, no plugs no unsafe contraptions, and following all the NEC codes. Those cables you used and the crimp terminals aren’t suited for the current rate. Check them if you don’t believe me. Crimp pressure plug in terminals are rated for around 6 amps of continuous AC current and I hope you used at least 600 A.C. volts insulation cable… Bad, bad idea.
Or the other takeaway is that only some piece of esoteric surplus made several decades ago is the right thing for the job and then one can go have a philosophical crisis about whether at this point we’re just plundering the ruins of a failed civilisation or not.
Once you’ve established these ground rules you can then tailor your approach based on a realistic expectation of the risk involved. This process might seem rather long-winded, but in practice it should only require a moment’s thought. It’s infinitely better to take that moment to think than get an unexpected and possibly lethal high-voltage electric shock.
High-end professional SLRs drop the mirror between exposures, providing a direct (however brief) view of the subject between shots. In contrast, in their highest-speed capture modes, the Sony A33 and A55 display a static image of the shot they’ve just captured. Rather than seeing interrupted glimpses of your subject in motion, the A55 displays a procession of still images, each lagging the subject motion.
The main issue would be shock protection. A bare PCB with solder mask probably won’t cut it for UL or CE. If you have vias in the element traces, it will probably be really dodgy. On a commercial product which you can’t (are not supposed to) open and tinker with, there is probably a way to do this easily. For a DIY printer, not so much.
