At the time I tried to get the regulatory authority in NSW to do something about it. Zero interest. Useless idiots.

TRIACs have very low junction voltage / resistance especially when compared to the load they are driving. When they are overloaded they heat causing the the junction voltage to increase rapidly causing exponentially more power to be dissipated by the TRIAC instead of the load. This whole process seems to take about a nanosecond and ends with a small amount of the plastic casing still attached to the legs.

Interesting idea. You don’t need a 3D printer for this though. Conductive strips or simple wire should work fine.

my first “real” job was in a video game arcade back in the 80’s my boss was a really cheap prick that used to buy asian cocktail machines that were “native” 110V, with a 240V to 110V step down transformer wedged in where it would fit, my second day I was fishing out a 20 cent coin that had missed the coin box, I got “zapped” hard enough to blow my finger nail in half and stop my heart.

Your friend died of what and why? Testing mains voltage across the back of his hand? Please. Mains voltage is not scary if you know what you are about. I dealt with volts up to 132KV and mega amps and megawatts in my career I worked in the UK electrical power industry.

Yeah, I screwed up this one. I was looking for the ON State voltage drop, but they were giving the power, which I multiplied by the current giving the wrong value above.http://www.nxp.com/documents/data_sheet/BT137-600E.pdf this shows about 3-6W @ 5A. I was trying to compare both relay and triac at 5A, significantly below their rated max load. It looks like the affirmation still stands, the triac will dissipate more, but now the number is not even double.

CARLO GAVAZZI is proud to announce the launch of the newest addition to its RGC Series Solid State Contactor platform. These single-phase zero-crossing relays, featuring an integral heat sink, offer the best in the class current rating of up to 37AAC at 40°C or 43AAC at 25°C.

Also, worth noting is that many cheap supplies out of China are designed for 110V/220V, +/- 10%. Consequently they’re designed to 121V/242V. For those of us in 240V areas, so in perfect conditions, they’re operating at the very top end of their specifications.

OK … back to the task at hand. Anyone care to comment on how a toaster oven is wired? How about a thermal blanket? None of these use a 12V or 24V switching power supply brick, so how do they do it???

I do not claim infallibility. I invite criticism of my designs. But I insist on that criticism be based on my work rather than be mere FUD.

I recall a battery add from the 70’s or 80’s that displayed the power of a couple of 1.5V cells powering an electromagnet that could lift a car.

Depends how far north you are – direct sunlight isn’t required for them to produce useful heat. If you’ve got a months long night then they’re no use though.
