Andrew, here in the Land Up Over, Most residential power is single phase, A step down center tap transformer (pole pig) puts out 240 VAC from end to end and 120 VAC with respect to the Neutral (ground) center tap. Therefore the two phases are 180 degrees out of phase. These 3 wires are fed to the fuse box/breaker panel in the house. One hot goes down one side of the row of breakers and the other hot goes down the other side. Neutral is common, Ground is also in there, but whether it is connected to Neutral inside the Breaker Panel or outside may differ according to local regulations.

I’ve left perhaps the most salient characteristic of the Sony AF55 and A33′s EVF till last: It’s huge. The view through the Sony A33′s eyepiece is much more akin to that of a full-frame DSLR than that of any competing sub-frame model currently on the market. It manages this with a comfortably high eye point (and plenty of dioptric adjustment) for eyeglass wearers, at least when simply viewing the live viewfinder image itself.

It can take 15 to 20 minutes for your air conditioner to get up and running after it’s tripped a circuit breaker or the power is turned off. Be patient and wait it out before trying something else.

Life gets in the way. No matter how much you plan, there will always be circumstances that, at the very least, interfere with that plan — if not throw it completely out the window.

So it’s – what happens to this board at 110 Volts and what are the consequences and the same for 240V, 1000V 10000V, ALL of these voltages. So it’s about what voltage will cause consequences and NOT what it is going to do at a specific assumed voltage, or more to the point ** where are the first points of failure with increasing voltage and what are the consequences.

Here is something to think about; Those floor finishers were doing this back in the days when “the code” only specified two wire outlets. . These days that would make a few people nervous. No case ground for the sander….

This is the sort of topic where it wouldn’t be a great idea to be dismissive of textbooks and/or formal instruction. Often local power line crews will put on a safety demonstration at hamfests. No doubt they would do the same for the various builder/hacker/maker spaces

I’m glad you are aware of all of the many issues surrounding this kind of a hack. I spent 15 years as a commercial electrician, so the first thing that I did when I started to read this was think, “Oh, crap. Someone’s going to kill themselves.” I’m glad that’s not the case here.

At least you thought about fuse and earth ground wire. Hopefully you also kept the thermal fuse of the iron – normally they have one to prevent fire in case of a welded thermostat contact (or short circuit in the solid state relay). And hopefully you kept or built a good case for all this (the open part of the iron).

Most systems now do not distribute ground (earth) from the MV / LV substation. At the sub the neutral is connected to ground through a low value resistor (<1 ohm) to a nest of earth spikes. Live and neutral are then distributed. At the house Neutral will be connected to a suitable ground point and at that point the earth connection is split off from the neutral. This means that any difference in ground potential is slowly leaked through the big resistor at the substation and it is a big resistor, looks like an oil tank maybe 2 metres high and 1.5 metres across. It is also normal that if there is any equipment at a pole it will also have an earth nest for the neutral wire.

If I scan a ceiling and I find a cold spot that doesn’t make any sense, I dig into it. Maybe it’s a plumbing leak from above, or maybe it’s just a cold water line that’s touching the ceiling. That’s where a moisture meter comes in handy. Ok, I’m getting sidetracked. Let’s discuss some electrical examples.
