The purpose of this project is to fabricate a heater for use in a 3D printer. Nobody is suggesting that we should somehow 3D print a heater.

I have plenty of stuff in my garage, including plenty of filled gas cans, but I have nothing within 18″ of the floor. Even the hot-tub boiler is elevated, which is why you see gas water heaters in garages elevated by concrete blocks.

I know some policies that clearly state work needs to be performed by “duly licensed” personnel (ie. you better be a licensed electrician or plumber). That’s one of the reasons I did not want to install my own automated transfer switch. Insurance company would possibly deny coverage in event of a mishap.

Many thermostats are battery-operated, and once they power down so will your air conditioner or heater. Check that your thermostat is fully operational and the connections to the wall are good.

Anyone that knows me really well, especially family members, is surprised/amazed that I’ve managed to be over 50 and still more or less bilaterally symmetrical, without too many visible scars.

For example, putting 1 mA through a 1 MOhm resistor requires 1000 Volts. The current itself is barely noticeable and if it’s high frequency current you’re unlikely to feel pain – it’s just a funny spark that kinda tickles at your fingertip – but it’s still depositing 1 Watts of power into the resistance.

But 110/120v A/C? that stuff is baby-play, as long as you realize that you shouldn’t use both hands, or use grounding straps, it just kinda buzzes, I’ve played around with TENS devices that had more (felt) kick than it…

And use a power circuit with a differential circuit breaker so if you touch live wire it will disconnect.

And another actually bigger reason for using DC instead of AC is when one wants x amount of mega watts of battery backed power, and converting that from DC to AC to DC again is rather inefficient, compared to just sending out the DC directly.

Leaving their advanced capabilities aside, the Sony A33 and A55 are also remarkably compact cameras. As we’ve noted elsewhere, because the mirror in the camera isn’t used to form a viewfinder image, it can be mounted at a steeper angle than normal, removing some thickness from the camera body as a whole (the flange-sensor distance must obviously remain the same, but there’s more room in the body for the shake-reduction system and other electronics), and the space normally required for the mirror drive system could be trimmed from the sides. As a result, the body is noticeably compact.
