They’ve lifted 200kg so far, and it looks like a pretty cool addition to a shop already packed with other builds, like their MOT spot welder and a propane tank sandblaster.
MOVs are rated for specific ac-line operating voltages. Exceeding these limits by applying a sustained abnormal overvoltage condition could result in overheating and damage to the MOV.
I’ve been looking for a capacitor for microwaves. I have this idea that I could use it for warming my coffee on the beach.
User interface. Sony has retained a similar menu system in the Sony A33 to that previously featured in the Alpha series DSLRs, but incorporating the new database-driven Playback mode from the NEX-series SLD models. The user interface of the Sony A33 is generally clean and easy to understand, with the one major exception being the rather arbitrary segregation of still images and videos in playback mode. Switching between viewing stills and videos requires the user to either enter the menu system, or zoom out to the thumbnail view and select the appropriate tab. Neither option is immediately obvious without reading the manual, and photographers unfamiliar with the interface might believe they’d accidentally deleted the unavailable media, not realizing they were simply in the wrong viewing mode.
Everything else on the datasheet are useless observations only true under test conditions. A few really awesome datasheets give junction to ambient, which is a blessing if you don’t need a heatsink.
This plate is too likely to touch the user. It’s sensible to have a certain fear of mains voltages, makes you pay attention when you’re working with it. The DC power suggested would come from the printer’s existing PSU, pay a little bit extra for a few more amps, the overall wattage isn’t high. Much less than I presume you’d use in industry. Thanks to power-hungry graphics cards, high-power PC PSUs are cheap.
Just three months after launching the NEX-3 and NEX-5 single-lens direct-view (SLD) cameras, Sony offers up yet another interchangeable lens alternative to the traditional DSLR, with the Alpha SLT-A33, and its closely-related sibling the SLT-A55. Instead of being mirrorless, the new digital cameras employ a "translucent mirror," more commonly known as a pellicle mirror. This advanced translucent mirror remains fixed in place during operation, allowing most of the light to reach the imaging sensor, while a small percentage is reflected to a dedicated autofocus sensor.
A couple months back I ran across a note in the datasheet for an inexpensive but reputably sourced power MOSFET that said that, while the die itself was rated for 200A continuous/400A peak the package and its leads were only rated for 125A/250A. So I said to myself “I wonder what the mode of failure looks like?” And built up a circuit to drive it to failure in a controlled manner. It was fairly spectacular: 1) the thermal expansion rate of the die doesn’t match that of the package and once you exceed some wattage tension builds up and (at least in the case of my particular DUT) the chip package literally exploded sending shards of epoxy and/or ceramic flying far and wide. 2) with the die now exposed in several areas and the connection to the heatsink thoroughly hosed by the explosion of the package things devolved rapidly and the magic blue smoke escapes (which smells very bad, FYI, and takes a while to fully purge that smell from the workshop).
When the cycling control opens, line voltage is taken away from the motor. The motor’s rotor decreases in speed. Thus, the back-EMF generated across the start winding decreases in magnitude. The relay’s coil now sees a lower back-EMF and no longer can generate enough magnetism in its iron core to keep contacts 1 and 2 open.
I’ve been bit in a big way only three times. Two of the three were “Trust but don’t verify” issues, and I learned from them – always verify, no matter what anyone says.
Oversizing switching gear is good to some point but instead of relay withstanding surges I would prefer breaker that would protect everything.
In the next part of this article we will venture inside some of the typical devices you will be working with to examine the individual hazards and techniques you might encounter.
