The AVIC-W8400NEX costs $1,200, while the AVIC-W6400NEX comes in at $800, and the AVH-W4400NEX will cost you $700. All the units are available to purchase now.
inserts probes into amperge socket sets to VAC and measures 120v wall socket meter goes bang and lets blue smoke out
Creepage to the mounting screws is one issue and that fuse crowed by traces at mains potential is just bad design.
The dimmer switch for the kitchen lights was rated for up to 600 watts, but the wattage at the lights was more than this; there were ten 65-watt bulbs on this circuit. This caused the front of the switch to get extremely hot, and creates a potential fire hazard. Have this corrected.
The theory side of PCB creepage clearnesses is useless because it assumes that there is one constant voltage that the circuit will run at when in reality it’s an over voltage event that usually causes failure, but here are the basics anyway.
I find it fascinating how the difference has also impacted the very different “styles” of electrical standards, construction, equipment, etc…the US has had to worry about thermal issues in different ways because of the lower voltage, but that also extended to higher voltage equipment as well, and an overall concern regarding fire (particularly in non-residential installations) when at the same time, we had a lot more natural resources piled around so in the US, we focus heavily on metallic enclosure and grounding (and the fact that our neutrals are meaningful when most Euro outlets are non-polar). At the same time, engineers were far more plentiful (and far less expensive) in postwar Europe than in the US, and the electrician:engineer ratio was very different. Likewise, that’s why NEMA and IEC in many ways are so different (NEMA is overbuilt, maintainable, easily specified but expensive and not particularly precise in application, meant for an electrician to be able to come up with the right contactor, etc.) whereas IEC stuff is more resource- and space-efficient but requires specification. Double-insulation is instead the focus in Europe, which doesn’t need any more metal to accomplish.
A hobbyist should not screw with a Triac on house wiring if it will be “permanently” installed in a junction box. Make an adapter that plugs into a socket on the outside so that it is clear it is not a normal outlet. If you have to homebrew something like this use a good relay or contactor with a UR approval. AND read the spec on it thoroughly.
It occurs to me that enormous subsidies have been expended to have put a handful of pure EVs on the road – still very expensive and not practical for a lot of people. I think a better carbon reduction bang for the buck wold be to incentivize PHEVs or even “conventional” hybrids.

Have to be ohnest I would never ever consider a SSR for such an application even if it was a genuine unit form a reputable supplier. this is a perfect example where a relay should be used, tried, tested and ought to fail somewhat gracefully if it came to it. Not snarking at the OP, but any situation I have used an SSR its been massively over-specced for the load im driving, i dont think I could sleep well at night with an SSR controlling tens of amps at hundreds of volts.
I really do like the C-Max, as it’s a compelling value, and it actually drives fairly well in my opinion.
Keep in mind that for a circuit to have a rating above 60°C (140°F), the wire as well as the breaker, disconnect lugs, and connection lugs in the equipment must all be rated at a temperature at or above the temperature rating being used. If any portion of the circuit utilizes non-metallic (NM) cabling — often known by the trade name Romex® — it must be rated at 60°C (140°F) according to article 334.80 of the NEC.
