not exactly mains but when i was a kid i enjoyed playing with photoflash caps and at one point had one fully charged to about 330V and discovered the negative post to the AA battery was also connected to the cap and put the entire shot up one arm, across my damn heart and out the other arm, my whole body locked up for only about a second (maybe 2) and i think i fell over (like people in taser videos but i was sitting). it sure shook me up and im glad it was only a small cap
MOVs tend to degrade gradually after a large surge or multiple small surges. This degradation leads to increasing MOV leakage current; in turn, this raises the MOVâs temperature, even under normal conditions such as a 120-V ac or 240-V ac operating voltage. A thermal disconnect adjacent to the MOV (Fig. 4) can be used to sense the increase in MOV temperature while it continues to degrade to its end-of-life condition. At this point, the thermal disconnect will open the circuit, removing the degraded MOV from the circuit and thus preventing potential catastrophic failure.
Depends how far north you are – direct sunlight isn’t required for them to produce useful heat. If you’ve got a months long night then they’re no use though.
Before we get too deep into this topic of wire sizing, let’s acknowledge that while detailed conductor sizing is the job of engineers and electricians (not HVACR technicians), there are many cases where contractors are tasked with assessing whether a breaker or conductor (wire) is adequate in both retrofit and service situations.

While we don’t currently have details on the precise viewfinder type employed by the Sony A33 — Sony describes it as a 0.46-inch diagonal (0.43-inch effective) Xtra Fine LCD Tru-Finder — it clearly employs a time-multiplexed method to display red, green, and blue color information at every pixel location, suggesting it is likely a ferroelectric LCD. This differs from traditional LCD displays, which mostly create color information with a cluster of three adjacent red, green, and blue subpixels (commonly called ‘dots’), for each pixel location. When compared to standard LCD electronic viewfinders, ferroelectric types bring both advantages and disadvantages. They’ve proven somewhat divisive in the past, due to their tendency to demonstrate RGB "rainbow" artifacts when you blink or move your eyes, or with fast-moving subjects. On the positive side, though, since each pixel provides full color, ferroelectric LCDs tend to look much smoother and more detailed than their traditional LCD siblings, with less obvious pixel structure. They also tend to have higher refresh rates, and indeed Sony specs the EVF used in the A33 as offering a 60Hz refresh rate. It’s not surprising to see such a display adopted by Sony, since Konica Minolta — the company Sony absorbed to create its DSLR division — was a particular proponent of their use.
I think it’s just fine and nice to see someone put care and thinking into this sort of thing in an unusual way for HaD. Usually people are either completely terrified or entirely cavalier about mains voltage in projects on here when all that is required is some respect and thoughtfulness like you have quite obviously displayed. Next you can add a power meter so you know how many quarters to give your friend
I think that’s technically just thin graphite. Graphene is 1 molecule thick sheets. People were gobsmacked when they discovered you could make it with sellotape.
For the voltage setting, I thought that wattage equaled volts times amps? Shouldn’t the waste heat be the same regardless of whether it’s drawing ten amps at 120 or five amps at 240? Or is it more complex and nonlinear than that? I’m curious.
For the person who jumps up and says “coatings insulate the water from the trace”, well no it doesn’t, we are talking about AC voltages and water that has formed over a large trace (even insulated) forms a capacitor that will conduct AC even when you have a DC insulation. Even if it did you then still have the exposed solder pads.
GM quickly realized this and changed the default to 8 A charging to prevent fires, and many others limit at 10 or 11 A.
This doesn’t make any sense, why not use an extension cord with the 220 already in the house? A 6 or 8 gauge cord for 75 feet should be perfectly fine.
