The place to start when talking about mains-voltage equipment is your bench. We realise you’ll probably be working at your kitchen table or wherever you happen to be, but it’s best to start an article like this with a baseline, of what you really should have when doing this stuff. There are three things we’d consider essential in the mains power system on a mains-voltage bench. An isolation transformer to power the item you are working on if it needs a mains supply, a residual current circuit breaker for the rest of your mains supplies, and an emergency isolation switch for all bench power.

Earthing is thus a vital part of power distribution safety. The only snag with open equipment on your bench is that any earth connection becomes a valid part of the return circuit for the power, and since that earth connection can come through you, that’s dangerous. The isolating transformer breaks that earth circuit for your bench, thus removing that particular hazard. The upshot of this is that you can safely touch either one of the two wires and because there’s no path to ground, you won’t get zapped. (Touching two wires completes the circuit. You still have to be careful!) Isolation transformers are also used to lift the ground so that you can connect mains circuitry up to your oscilloscope, even though the black probe clip is connected to earth ground.

The crimp terminals I am using are rated for 24A, and I am using a ratcheting crimping tool. I have checked, and therefore I do not believe you.

While the Sony A55 and A33′s singular claim to fame is its exceptional shooting speed, that’s only part of what it has to offer. Just in the last year, Sony has used its high-speed sensor technology to create a number of innovative new camera features that, on their face, have nothing to do with high-speed shooting. This hands-on report is already running far too long, so I’ll just make brief mention of some of these special Sony modes here. Even if you feel no need for 7 to 10 fps capture in your personal shooting, these special exposure modes alone would be reason enough to buy one of these cameras.

I’ve been shocked a few times. First time, a friend and I were changing out outlets in a room in his house. He shut off the breaker for the room, and I watched him plug a lamp in and test it. I found out the HARD way, that each side of the room was ran through a different breaker… I got a quick jolt and the gerber tool I was using catapulted across the room…

Beside the Canadian electrical code require fully dedicated 20 amps circuit for 120 volts vehicule charging. Common receptacle are week and cheap and are worn by abuse plugins and pulling all sorts of appliances in and out.

While the Sony A33 and A55′s viewfinder display led to a bit of a learning curve for tracking fast action, its buffer-clearing speed is an ongoing issue. The A55 can capture shots with amazing speed, but once its buffer is filled, things slow down dramatically. The A33, for its part, has a smaller buffer, but it takes less time to clear. The most irritating point with the A55 was that it seemed to take forever before it would let me look at what I’d just shot. This is certainly more of an issue for a relatively inexperienced user than a pro sports photographer, but I often found myself wanting to check out what I’d just shot before the next action sequence started so I could note and correct for any problems in my shooting style. If I’d filled the buffer, though, it took upwards of 15-18 seconds before I could even view the first image on the LCD — and a good while longer before the buffer was completely empty and the camera was back to its maximum burst-length capacity. Shoot RAW+JPEG and it takes 32 seconds to clear a maximum of 18 images, while the A33 only captures 7 images and takes 12 seconds to clear. Advantage A33.

“I don’t think” – hehehe I’ll agree with that. My utility company provides 3rd world electricity in August. Most days the juice drops to 103 without anything on in the house. I’d love to have as much as 110. Fortunately, the L1 car charger works down to 100, and the L2 stuff works at 187 – the lowest I’ve measured. 5 big reasons why the juice is so bad, but then I’m not paying for the loss, so its not a biggie with me. Just worry a bit about the refrig and freezer.

That said, why not use 12v halogens (or even mains voltage halogens) to provide the heat? They are ~99% efficient at that, cheap, plentiful, universally available…

I can only think of a single instance in the last six months where the HPWC higher charge rate would have made a difference for us, and even then it would have simply made leaving for a long trip slightly more comfortable.

Stripping wire with my teeth (my front teeth have a perfect gap at the bottom for it, I could probably specify them in AWG) to fit the socket onto a phone extension cable. While rather stupidly forgetting I’d plugged the damn thing in downstairs. Yowch! Fortunately it wasn’t ringing. As a mistake, it was educational.
