The only powertrain available to test was the new, higher-powered 2.0-litre hybrid, designed to offer eco-conscious buyers who like a bit more performance an alternative to the resolutely fuel- and CO2-focused 1.8-litre. Mated to a six-speed auto, there are two standout features: chiefly, that the link between the accelerator position, revs and actual performance are better matched than ever before, with the CVT-esque disconnect between them now greatly – if not entirely – reduced, and secondly that, so long as you are happy to let the gearbox run as an auto, rather than play with the mostly superfluous wheel-mounted paddleshifters and try to act out your inner F1 driver fantasy, there is strong, smooth performance on offer.

8 or 12 is usually less than level 2 installations. As I mention they are cool running and very safe. I dare anyone to find a 2012 Tesla MC charging at 40 amperes to say it is ‘cool running’. If it was very hot at the authorized Tesla Service Center, that is all I need to know.

Would that have ever been considered good wiring practice, or is it just the sort of short-cut that would have been done at some point?

Many will ask what protects the circuit in an overload condition between the MCA and MOCP ratings? In these overload conditions, the overload protections on the motors themselves are designed to protect the circuit. If the overload protection on the compressor or fan motor fails, the windings in the motors have a far lower ampacity than the branch circuit and will fail open or shorted before the branch conductor will fail. In the case of any significant ground-fault short, the overcurrent protector (breaker or fuse) will still protect the circuit.

You are correct and if you design this type of solution you already know this. With PCB design, the alternatives are heavier copper, wider traces, plating up copper in the areas that carry heavy current or a combo of any of the three. But you can only go so far with these solutions. Hack apart a known good SSR and I bet they use the exact same solution.

2. It’s very likely that this device will need to be used with extension cords in order to find two GFCI-free outlets in different phases. That, fundamentally, is why this project is – generally speaking – a bad idea. Still, extension cords can be used safely if you don’t draw too much current through them. The use notes in the article speak to the need to derate circuits appropriately. But that said, the derating doesn’t change just because you pull 240V instead of 120V.

220 volt +/- 10% isn’t really a good design standard. As it doesn’t live up to the requirements within the EU to start with.

I worked in telephony for many years, and the ring voltage can be as high as 180 bolts at various frequencies, but, rather low current. In really old telco systems it may also be a square wave.

He’s not using a pool side remote box but emulating it. But what if he wanted to use both? At the moment it’s simulating the buttons. What if you need to both simulate the buttons and also read them if they are pressed?

For this application I would have used a contactor from a reputable supplier that breaks the connection on both legs of the 220V circuit vs a cheap ebay SSR.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contactor

It will only trip the breaker if you have a bonded ground. Soil resistivity has everything to do with it, and is the reason most homes have bonded grounds (the soil resistivity is too high to provide adequate current flow to trip a standard breaker). Unless you have a GFI on that circuit you can still get shocked. Earth ground won’t help you until the voltage gets high enough to cause enough current to flow to trip a standard breaker, and NEC requirements set the limit on earth ground resistivity, the limit they set ends up equaling a voltage of 600 volts required to trip a standard breaker, and that is why most (single family) homes have bonded grounds. Earth ground is only for high voltage transients.
