The risk / reward ratio just doesn’t seem worth it to me, when it’s so easy to have an intrinsically safe low-voltage one.
The plug-in Kia Niro has an 8.9 kWh battery (vs. 1.6 kWh in the regular car). You can quickly estimate the amount of kWh you used in the week as long as the battery was fully drained every time you plugged the car in (it’s fully drained if the gasoline engine kicks in) and you know how many times you charged the car.
We must also remember that just because an item is unplugged and may also of not been plugged in for a few days it can still hold a big charge in the electrolytic capacitors. Back in the 80’s I used to work for a service department in the uk called Vallances. When working on tv’s with a crt I found that crt screens that had not been plugged in for a week or two could still hold a big charge and the first thing I did was to short the tube to discharge it. I also remember one of the older engineers working on an old valve radio which was unplugged at the time, suddenly there was a bang and a big cloud of smoke and a very stunned engineer. All I an guess is that an old electrolytic capacitor was shorted and exploded. So remember when something is unplugged it can still be very dangerous, more so with microwave capacitors.
I’ve left perhaps the most salient characteristic of the Sony AF55 and A33′s EVF till last: It’s huge. The view through the Sony A33′s eyepiece is much more akin to that of a full-frame DSLR than that of any competing sub-frame model currently on the market. It manages this with a comfortably high eye point (and plenty of dioptric adjustment) for eyeglass wearers, at least when simply viewing the live viewfinder image itself.
Electrical installations in Northern States are much more insulated from the weather than those of you in warm climates, so the typical installations for car charging are almost never $300.
As an engineer over 20 years ago I coined the term Beancounter Engineering this kind of stuff where some Idiot MBA sets the specs based on saving a few pennies rather than a Electrical Engineer that understands basic (and complex) science. If you are too damned stupid to understand the basic science behind Global Warming you have no business being an engineer or telling engineers what to do

I’m not claiming this is a new phenomenon (I’ve done some stupid things with electricity myself, before the www was even invented) but we know that the media isn’t always rational about these matters.
I use these kinds of SSRS in high current applications driving kilns. we protect ourselves quite happily by having a contactor in the line. The SSR when it fails fails ON and the contactor is help closed all the time but overtemp or any other kind of alarm will release teh contactor and break teh circuit. My recommendation – and no one wil ever get to the bottom of the comments on this feed – is to add a contactor in series which is help closed and opened in an alarm condition. Then the SSR can fail to its heart’s content and you’re good. The SSR is of course much better at switching on and off than the relay which will fail eventually from on/off transients. As usual – YMMV
I know a lot of people that have never heard about “makers” but I wouldn’t trust them near any mains wiring – like my own dad who has wired a circuit breaker between live and neutral. Only the ensuing BANG and my mom’s swearing and yelling from the now dark kitchen have disabused him of the idea that that is how it should be done.
The only people having trouble with L1 are those DOPES who haven’t read their owner’s manuals. There all EV manuals state that car charging is a heavy continuous load, and it requires high-quality receptacles that have been tested to make sure they are safe by someone competent.
The media aren’t rational about anything. Not something you can really do much about, especially by being reasonable. Try not to think about it too much, is probably the best way to cope.
