It’s the same with larger, more power hungry projects as well. [Nerd Ralph] has been running a mining rig for a few years now, and has learned just how important proper power supply management can be. His strategy involves using interlocks to ensure everything powers up at the same time to avoid feedback problems, running a separate ground wire between all GPU cards and the PSU and running the supplies at 220 for the NA folks.
You have right, a isolated SMPS is used. The Microchip solution presented above will not work properly because of the ESP Module power requirements.
Several hot features were brought over from Sony’s NEX and Cyber-shot digital cameras, including Sweep Panorama, 3D Sweep Panorama, Auto High-Dynamic Range, and Handheld Twilight modes, each of which strategically combine and align several images into one seamless shot. It’s pretty impressive stuff. As if that weren’t enough, Sony has added an extra mode for the SLT-series cameras — Multi-Frame NR — which operates similarly to the handheld twilight mode, but allows the ISO sensitivity to be specified.
Or the other takeaway is that only some piece of esoteric surplus made several decades ago is the right thing for the job and then one can go have a philosophical crisis about whether at this point we’re just plundering the ruins of a failed civilisation or not.
Oh, and if you want a car charging hack, there’s always the Hydra: http://hackaday.io/project/3939-j1772-hydra
This seems to me that your experiment failed due to thermal failure cased by insufficient cooling and not the part itself..You stated yourself that the part failed due to thermal expansion (insufficient cooling). But it’s still a valid experiment with valid results. And you show that it’s up to the designer (or designers) to design the entire product, which includes sufficient cooling. This is one area where home designs fail – a lot.
“180 bolts per second”? Now there’s an engineering unit I’ve never encountered in more then 50 years. No, it’s just a 150-180 volt sinusoidal or square wave at various frequencies. In past years, the coil on the bell was mated to an appropriate capacitor to allow ringing a specific phone on a “party line” based on the ring frequency. It was amazing stuff for a time when they simply hadn’t run enough wires for all of the individual “private lines”, so they had to engineer very basic things to fill the need. It was in a sense, the most basic and pure form of understanding the physics (electrical and mechanical) hacking.
But there are some compromises that come with more fluid visuals. Samsung’s FreeSync mode only supports 1080p resolution for now, and the company notes that it might cause some random weirdness with the TV’s brightness at times. Probably still worth switching on just to see the difference it makes.
I have seen a 10cm hole blown right through the middle of circuit board. I have had many repair jobs that it’s been obvious that lightning has hit the overhead power lines, exploded parts, vaporised PCB traces. Non of these had any negative outcomes except having to repair the device or throwing it in the bin, generally the latter.
You do in fact need to be a licensed engineer/electrician to design stuff with mains voltage, or you need to have your work inspected and signed for by one. It’s not just a matter of good instruction – it’s illegal for the regular Joe to even repair mains powered circuits beyond swapping a frayed power cord.
If the car achieved its minimum 44 mpg and used 3.1 gallons, that means 136 miles were done on gasoline and 117 were EV miles.
Engineering types have been known to reduce “Preventive Maintenance” in the large “Mains” switch panels in an attempt to save budget funding. A close friend stepped up to a sadly neglected switch panel, pushed the dis-connect and the panel door blew off in his face. It seems that dust is conductive, and will explode if a large spark is present. The good news, he is alive, and was promoted to avoid a lawsuit.
