In reviewing my experience with the Sony A55 and A33, it’s interesting to find so many of my notes and so much of my attention directed to the viewfinder display. Were I not already so familiar with Sony’s multi-shot exposure technology, the camera’s multi-shot features would doubtless have commanded more of my attention, as they’re worthy features indeed. That said, though, the viewfinder turned out to be absolutely integral to my experience with the camera.

The third incident was also while I was working for the welding repair company. I had a previously perfectly working high-pot tester and needed to test the insulation on a transformer. The tester itself failed and shorted to the case – and I took 11kv AC to the fingers just by turning the power on. That stung a bit, but I got a new high-pot out of the deal, so a net positive.

Creating a PCB heat bed isn’t an art – it’s a science. There are equations and variables to calculate, possibly some empirical measurements by measuring the resistance of a trace, but Ohm’s Law is a law for a reason. If you do things right, you can make a PCB heat bed perfectly suited for the task. You can even design in safety features like overcurrent protection and fuses. It can’t be that hard. After all, your house is full of devices that are plugged into the wall.

I guess writer JIM must be a “NEWBIE” or is otherwise mis-informed, but IEVs is continuing the FICTION that Underwriter’s Laboratories (UL) ‘CERTIFIES’ anything. He isn’t alone since every IEV writer says the same thing and its getting to be an echo chamber – but the end result is that IEVs is passing out bad information.

You do in fact need to be a licensed engineer/electrician to design stuff with mains voltage, or you need to have your work inspected and signed for by one. It’s not just a matter of good instruction – it’s illegal for the regular Joe to even repair mains powered circuits beyond swapping a frayed power cord.

Tilt level. The Sony A33 includes a dual-axis level gauge, which helps ensure level horizons and prevent converging verticals in photos. The level gauge can be shown on either the electronic viewfinder or the rear-panel LCD, but only alongside the most basic information overlay — you can’t combine the detailed display overlays with the level gauge. A clever way around it, though, is to set one viewer to the level gauge, and the other to a more informative display, since by default you can set the display modes independently. There’s no way for the user to recalibrate the gauge, if they find the factory default to be inaccurate. The gauge is displayed in a style reminiscent of an aircraft attitude indicator, but with a separation of the roll and pitch indicators. When the camera is perfectly level, the pitch indicators and markings at the end of the roll indicator are illuminated in green.
